Gulf Coast Mensa participates in various volunteering opportunities around the region.
Our next event will be Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 9am to noon. Join us for an enhancement event at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, a 155-acre nature sanctuary with over five miles of trails, demonstration meadow and several ponds. We’ll work with the conservation staff on a selected project to enhance the ecological health of our Arboretum.
We will assist with the removal of understory plant species. Removal of brush is important in restoring the ecological health of our nature sanctuary as this shrub layer is often invasive which degrade the habitat value for our native plant and animal species. We will receive instruction and supervision from the conservation staff. The conservation activity is physically demanding and requires the ability to navigate uneven surfaces in walking and working.
Dress Code: Closed heel/toe shoes are required, work boots or sturdy leather sneakers are suggested. Wear clothes that can get dirty and are weather appropriate. Optional items for personal comfort: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses & refillable water bottle. For safety reasons, no headphones/ear buds, mp3 players, etc. are allowed. Gloves and tools will be provided.
The weather is currently scheduled to be clear, but if there is heavy rain or storms, the event will be cancelled. Call Theo at 713-366-0429 on the day of the event if you are uncertain of conditions.
All volunteers must complete a registration and release form. Please bring your form with you to the Arboretum. Parking fills up quickly - if the main lot is full, please park in the satellite parking area located ¼ of a mile east of the Arboretum.
